Every winter thousands of North Pacific humpback whales come to Hawaii to breed and calve, and the shallow channels between Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kahoolawe are part of their protected sanctuary. From the air you see them as a dark shape under turquoise water, a white blow, a splash where a tail came down. A boat gets you closer. A plane gets you the whole channel at once.
This post covers the 2026-27 season: the months, the federal distance rule that applies to aircraft, and which of the flights on this site cross the most whale water.
The quick answer
Humpbacks are in Maui waters from November through April, with January to March the peak. Aircraft must stay 1,000 feet away from them, so expect to see whales from altitude, not hovering over them. The flights that spend most of their time over the channels give you the best odds, and February is the safest month to book.
When is humpback whale season on Maui in 2026-27?
From November through April. The peak is January to March, when the most whales are in the channels.
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary puts it plainly: from November through April, visitors can see whales from shore and at sea. The first arrivals in November are scattered. By late December the numbers climb fast, and the busy stretch runs through March before the whales head north again in April.
NOAA's volunteer Sanctuary Ocean Count is a good marker of the peak: it runs on the last Saturday of January, February and March, which the sanctuary calls peak whale season. On the 2027 calendar those Saturdays are 30 January, 27 February and 27 March.
| Month | Whales in Maui waters | Our take for a flight |
|---|---|---|
| November | First arrivals, scattered | A bonus if you see one |
| December | Numbers climbing | Good odds by the holidays |
| January to March | Peak season | The best months to fly |
| April | Last whales leaving | Possible, not likely |
| May to October | Gone north | No whales, clearer focus on cliffs |
How close can a plane or helicopter get to a whale in Hawaii?
No closer than 1,000 feet. Boats, swimmers, kayaks and drones must keep 100 yards away.
The federal humpback approach rules cover aircraft as well as boats: 1,000 feet (300 m) when operating an aircraft, 100 yards (90 m) by any means on or in the water, and that includes drones. The rules apply year-round, across Hawaiian waters and out to 200 nautical miles.
In practice your pilot will not swoop down on a pod. You spot whales the way a pilot does: blows, a pale shape under the surface, a breach far off. Bring sunglasses with polarised lenses, which cut the glare on the water, and ask the pilot to call out sightings over the headset.
Which Maui air tours give you the best chance of seeing whales?
The ones that spend the most time over the channels: the 3 Islands plane flight and the two helicopter tours that cross to Molokai.
Whales sit in the shallow water between the islands, not over Haleakala. A flight that crosses the Pailolo Channel or runs down the West Maui coast past Lahaina and Olowalu covers far more whale water than one that heads inland to the crater.
The 3 Islands private flight passes Kapalua, Ka'anapali, Lahaina, Olowalu, Molokini and Kaho'olawe, nearly all of it along the coast. Maverick's Molokai and Maui helicopter tour crosses the Pailolo Channel, and its listing tells you to watch for whales and dolphins on the way. Air Maui's Complete Island helicopter tour says in its description that in winter you can sometimes spot humpbacks from the sky.
| Flight | Over the water | Whale odds in season |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Islands private plane | Most of the route: West Maui, Molokini, Kaho'olawe | High |
| Molokai & Maui helicopter | Pailolo Channel crossing | High |
| 5 Island private plane | Coast, Lanai, Molokini | Good |
| Complete Island helicopter | Some coast, mostly valleys and cliffs | Fair |
| Haleakala crater plane | Short coastal legs | Low |
Mostly over the water: Lahaina, Molokini and Kaho'olawe in an hour, from $380 per person.

Recent reviews mention whales on the 3 Islands plane flight, the Maverick helicopter and Air Maui's Complete Island tour.
A February 2026 guest on the 3 Islands flight wrote: "We saw whales, Molokini crater, non active volcano, the valley, and three other islands." A December 2025 Maverick passenger said the pilot "made some time for whale watching". And an April 2024 Air Maui reviewer remembers the pilot saying "now let's see if we can find whales at the end of the season and he did!"
Nobody can promise a sighting from the air. Wind chop hides blows, and on a cloudy day the water reads grey. Our air tour tips cover seat choice and timing.

Is a whale-watching boat better than a flight?
For close-up whales, yes. For the islands, the cliffs and whales as a bonus, fly.
A boat trip from Ma'alaea or Lahaina gets you within the legal 100 yards, and the whales sometimes come closer on their own. A flight trades that for the view: four islands, Molokini's crescent, Haleakala and waterfalls in an hour or so. Prices are a different league too. The private planes start at $380 per person with two travelers minimum, the helicopters at about $404 per person.
Plenty of people do both. If you're on the water anyway, the Calypso snorkel cruise to Molokini runs from Ma'alaea Harbor, and in winter you cross the same water the whales use.

For late December and February, book a few weeks out. Viator says the flagship flight is booked about 59 days ahead on average.
Winter is high season on Maui, and the holiday weeks fill first. The Viator listing for the 5 Island flight shows that it is booked 59 days in advance on average. Every flight on this site has free cancellation, 24 hours ahead on the planes and Air Maui, 3 days on Maverick, so an early booking costs you little if the weather turns.
Book an early-week morning if you can, and keep a spare day in your trip. Trade winds and clouds can scrub a flight, and a spare day gives you a second shot. Prices are compared in our price guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can you see whales from a Maui helicopter tour?
Yes, in season. From November through April humpbacks are in Maui waters, and flights that cross the Pailolo Channel or run along the West Maui coast give the best odds. Aircraft must stay 1,000 feet away, so you see them from altitude.
What is the best month for whales on Maui?
February is the safest bet. January to March is the peak; NOAA's Sanctuary Ocean Count runs on the last Saturday of each of those months.
How far must aircraft stay from humpback whales in Hawaii?
1,000 feet (300 m). On or in the water, including drones, the distance is 100 yards (90 m). The rules apply year-round across Hawaiian waters.
Are there whales on Maui in October?
No, or almost none. The season starts in November, and the bulk of the whales arrive from late December.
