Haleakala from the air

From the road you see Haleakala's crater from its rim. From the air you see the whole thing at once: cinder cones, colored ash and the long valleys falling toward Hana.

Haleakala rises to 10,023 feet, and its famous crater is a huge summit valley. Three flights on this site put it on their route: a private one-hour plane flight, a 90-minute private loop of Maui, and a one-hour helicopter tour.

Here is how they differ, and how a flight fits with a drive to the summit.

The quick answer

The Haleakala private flight is a one-hour flight from Kahului, from $380 per person with two travelers minimum, over the crater and the Hana side; its listing promises refunds for weather cancellations. The Circle Island private flight adds West Maui and the south shore in 90 minutes. The Complete Island helicopter flies into the crater area in a shared cabin.

What is the Haleakala crater, exactly?

It is not a true volcanic crater: the National Park Service describes it as an erosional valley, about 3,000 feet deep and 2.5 miles wide at its widest.

Erosion carved it; later eruptions dotted the floor with cinder cones and fresh lava. That is the red, brown and grey landscape you look down on. The summit itself stands at 10,023 feet.

What does the Haleakala private flight see?

The south shore from Kihei to La Perouse Bay, the lava fields, the crater, then Red Sand Beach, Hana and the Road to Hana.

The listing's pass-by points start at the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum and run along Kihei, Wailea and Makena State Park before climbing to Haleakala National Park. Its overview adds the Crater Road and the Makawao Forest Reserve, and promises non-tinted windows. One guest liked "looking down at the volcano and see[ing] some kind of activity that is not visible by road".

Plane or helicopter for the crater?

The helicopter gets lower into the terrain; the plane keeps your group alone and costs less for two.

The Complete Island listing talks about the "inside of Haleakala Crater" and the colored cinder cones, then crosses to the West Maui Mountains and the Wall of Tears. It is $513 per seat, about $1,027 for two. The Haleakala plane flight is $760 for two. Compare the whole trade-off in plane vs helicopter on Maui.

What if clouds cover the summit?

It happens: the crater flight refunds weather cancellations, and the helicopter may change route.

The park service says on its Haleakala weather page that summit conditions can change quickly, with clouds and rain replacing sunshine. One Complete Island guest wrote: "Great flight, even though we got rerouted due to cloud cover over Haleakala." Fly in the morning, and early in your stay.

Should you fly over Haleakala or drive up for sunrise?

Do both if you can; they show you very different things.

Driving up for sunrise needs a vehicle reservation for entry between 3 and 7 AM, booked on recreation.gov up to 60 days ahead, according to the park's sunrise page. It warns that dawn at the summit is regularly wet, windy and below freezing. The flight needs no reservation from the park and no 3 AM alarm. One guest put it neatly: "Do this tour then drive up, gives two very different perspectives."

Is a Haleakala air tour worth it?

For most guests, yes: the crater flight holds 4.9 stars from 48 reviews.

Praise centers on the views and the pilots. One guest wrote: "Views were stunning and one of a kind". The lone two-star review complains about a rushed pilot and the equipment, and another guest mentions an old aircraft, so keep expectations about the cabin modest. At $380 per person for an hour alone with your group, it is a short, private way to see the summit from above.

Can you add Hana by air?

Yes: the crater flight already passes Hana, and a gyrocopter flies from Hana Airport itself.

The Hana gyrocopter flight ($260 per person, private) starts at Hana Airport and lists the Road to Hana, Hana, the Pipiwai Trail and Haleakala National Park. It takes ages 12 and up with a 250 lb limit. One guest called the Road to Hana drive the hardest part of the trip.
